USA Taxpayer  Opposes Biased Historical Narrative and Unjust Legislation CO SB123

Dear Senators,<br />

As  a hardworking tax paying American of Turkish descent living in district  I am committed to truthful historical education, I  express my  firm opposition to recent legislative attempts to endorse a selective and disputed interpretation of the World War I  - 1915 events calling for "genocide". While I  value the teaching of history, it must be rooted in balanced, scholarly research not in contested claims that remain unresolved both academically and legally in a human rights court room.<br />
<br />
The designation of "genocide" is not simply rhetorical t is a precise legal term defined by the 1948 United Nations Convention. This definition demands clear evidence of an intent to annihilate a group. To date, no international judicial authority, including the <br />International Court of Justice, has labeled the 1915 events as genocide during World war 1 in Ottoman /Turkiye . In fact, the European Court of Human Rights (Perinçek v. Switzerland, 2015) acknowledged the matter remains open to interpretation and as opinion , not settled law.<br />

It is essential to recognize the full historical landscape. The Ottoman Empire, then engaged in World War I, confronted internal rebellions by armed Armenian factions allied with Russian enemy forces. The resulting chaos led to tragic losses on all sides. While the Ottoman relocations were undoubtedly harsh, they were not part of a campaign to eliminate an entire people.<br />
Framing this painful history through a unilateral lens disregards the suffering of countless Ottoman Muslims, Jews, and others, and injects modern political motives into a complex past. Such measures risk straining diplomatic ties between the United States and the Republic of Türkiye an essential NATO  ally?and alienating a vital American community.<br />

I  urge you Senator to reject this resolution. A more constructive path lies in encouraging open academic discourse and supporting reconciliation based on mutual acknowledgment of all losses. Only through inclusive dialogue can we honor history and build bridges of understanding.<br /><br />
